“Dark Ambient” Reviews

All of this comes together to create that most unique of sensations in the listener: awe.

Designed for Reading retains a consistent cinematic feel, full of dramatic drones, haunting vocal pieces, and dark slabs of ambience.

These are vast recordings, traveling from the deepest crypts to the furthest reaches of space.

There’s hardly a minute on the disc that isn’t awash with blackened waves of drone and drift, eerie scrapings and ringings, and whatnot.

Recent days have seen the release of a trio of Caul titles (one of which is a three disc collection itself), with more on the way.

This is a soundtrack for outer space, with all of its wonders and terrors.

Much of the music seems too thickly enshrouded by its sonic fog to hold your interest for very long.

Much of the music on here is pretty challenging, but fortunately for the listener, it almost always delivers.

Definitely a mood piece, one that evokes a sense of power and majesty amidst sorrow.

Caul is similar in tone, but far more, dare I say, melodic and musical than anything I’ve heard by Lustmord.

Evokes scenes of long-abandoned cathedrals in the wasteland, Christian ceremonies carried out in the catacombs, black-robed monks carrying out their sacred duties.

There’s a great sense of intimacy and warmth here, which sounds odd compared with the often bleak and frightening sounds Caul uses.
