A brief rundown of what my life looks like these days. Last updated May 17, 2024.

Did you know that it’s possible to cough for so long and so hard that you actually injure yourself? I’ve been battling a lingering illness for the last month or so, mostly in the form of violent coughing fits. Earlier this week, I experienced some severe stabbing chest pain during one such fit that was diagnosed as costochondritis (inflammation of the ribcage’s cartilage). I had a kidney stone last year, and if I’m honest, costochondritis was more painful, if that tells you anything.

This illness has robbed me of a lot of momentum; it’s hard to focus when you know you could double over in a coughing fit at any moment. Which means that my output here on Opus has suffered a bit, as have some other projects. But I believe I’m on the mend, and I have a newfound sympathy for folks dealing with truly long-term chronic illnesses.

Our family’s been wanting to go on a proper vacation for awhile now, but something has always come up. (Two years ago, for instance, we needed to use our vacation funds to put a new roof on our house.) But 2024 looks to be the year that we actually leave Lincoln for an extended trip. We’re heading to Michigan’s upper peninsula, where my wife and son went last year and had a fantastic time, to see the sights, go birding, visit some friends, and just unplug (literally and figuratively).

Site-wise, I’m making plans to upgrade Opus to Craft v5, which contains some really cool possibilities for managing and editing content. I’m eager to try out a few ideas that will hopefully making running Opus a bit more efficient. Unfortunately, I’ll need to put my DevOps hat on first to get my server ready. I’d hoped to avoid that by moving the site off DigitalOcean, but I guess it can’t be avoided.
