“An Infinite Horizon” by Makeup and Vanity Set
“An Infinite Horizon” was my introduction to the world of Makeup and Vanity Set’s synth music, and it’s a world that I’ve never really left. One of the leading lights of the “synthwave” and “dreamwave” scenes, Makeup and Vanity Set — aka, Matthew Pusti — draws inspiration from classic synth sounds (e.g., Tangerine Dream, Vangelis) to create richly cinematic soundscapes. But unlike many of his peers, Pusti’s music is more than a simple exercise in slavish nostalgia.
As befitting its title, “An Infinite Horizon” is one of the more ambient tracks in Makeup and Vanity Set’s oeuvre, an assemblage of shimmering, coruscating sounds that — to these ears, anyway — evoke bleak, Blade Runner-esque environs and cosmic graveyards fill with the hulls of alien lightships.
