Vangelis’ soundtrack for Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner is arguably one of the greatest soundtracks ever composed, blending sweeping electronic soundscapes with jazz, strings, and Middle Eastern elements to bring the film’s vision of 2019 Los Angeles to life. There’s a reason why “Blade Runner-esque” has become a useful descriptor for the ambient, electronic, synthwave, and vaporwave genres, and to this day, songs like “Blush Response,” “Blade Runner Blues,” and the end titles theme still sound like they’re emanating from the cinematic future.

Given Blade Runner’s influential status, it’s rather mind-boggling that an official soundtrack wasn’t made available until more than a decade after the film’s release. More mind-boggling still, a truly comprehensive Blade Runner soundtrack still hasn’t been released. Not legally, anyway. Although many versions have been released over the years, no official release contains the full score.

For example, the 1994 release — which is the version I’m most familiar with — contains several compositions that weren’t even in the movie. Even the 3CD set released for the film’s 25th anniversary lacks some of the music from the film. As such, multiple fan-made soundtracks have been released over the years, from the very first bootleg released in 1982 to 2017’s six-disc “Esper” edition. That so many people have spent countless hours trying to create a definitive Blade Runner soundtrack testifies to the impact of Vangelis’s visionary work.
