For some people, John Bonham’s opening salvo on “When the Levee Breaks” is the epitome of rock drumming. For me, it’s the opening moments of “Dreams Burn Down” as Loz Colbert’s drums crash like breakers before they’re met by Mark Gardener and Andy Bell’s dual guitar attack.

Like much of Nowhere, there’s an angst-y, existential urgency to “Dreams Burn Down” that you don’t really hear in their shoegaze contemporaries of the era, with Gardener singing “We fill up our days and nights/We fill up the gaps in our empty little lives/But we know we are doomed the moment we walk out the room” like he’s just discovered the book of Ecclesiastes.

“I just want what I can’t have/‘Til my dreams burn down and choke me every time” he sings, only to be drowned out by a squall of guitar noise, making “Dreams Burn Down” one of the most bracing songs from shoegaze’s first wave.
