“Fade Into You” by Mazzy Star
I spent much of my college freshman year in my dorm’s TV lounge. Since I didn’t have cable TV growing up, the lounge represented an opportunity to catch up on a wealth of pop culture that I’d missed out on, and specifically, music videos. Mazzy Star’s So Tonight That I Might See was released the year before I started college, and “Fade Into You” was in nigh-constant rotation on MTV.
Two videos were produced for the song, but I always preferred Kevin Kerslake’s, which featured grainy, slow-motion footage of the band ambling through the Mojave Desert. I may or may not have had a significant crush on Hope Sandoval at the time, something my fellow inhabitants of Selleck’s third floor often ribbed me about — but can you really blame me? Her languorous voice, equal parts seductive and aloof, is still intoxicating even after all these years, especially when paired with David Roback’s lazy guitar. (Sadly, Roback died in 2020 from cancer.)
