Much has been made of the fact that three of Luxury’s members are Orthodox priests. While that does nothing to blunt their melodic-yet-ferocious post-punk sound — think Fugazi covering The Smiths, if you will — it does mean their songs resonate on a deeper level than you might initially expect.

Case in point, “Fur / Ticker Tape” finds frontman Lee Bozeman overwhelmed by all of the news of a world going to hell in a hand basket. A still small voice constantly calls him back to deeper truths, though, urging him to remember the “one who hung the curtain of the cosmos” even as he wonders if there’s anything “left to dream.” The song steadily progresses from despair to hope, its final line containing a simple plea: “With this world, let me make my peace.”

Ever since I first heard it, “Fur / Ticker Tape” has become a balm for me in an age where strongmen, narcissists, and autocrats are doing their damndest to inflict their vision of the world upon the rest of us. Luxury’s song is a reminder that wealth, power, and corruption won’t have the final say because something deeper and bigger than we can possibly imagine is always at work behind the scenes.
