“Holocaust” by This Mortal Coil
This Mortal Coil’s debut album is best known for Elizabeth Fraser and Robin Guthrie’s iconic cover of Tim Buckley’s “Song to the Siren.” (And when I first started getting into graphic design, Vaughan Oliver’s distinctive artwork was everything I ever wanted to create.) But It’ll End in Tears is full of gorgeous songs that make it both a showcase for the classic 4AD sound and one of the greatest goth/dream pop albums of all time.
For my money, though, it’s the cover of Big Star’s “Holocaust,” from 1978’s Third, that really takes my breath away. This Mortal Coil’s version is pretty faithful, with Magazine’s Howard Devoto ably capturing Alex Chilton’s mannerisms. But the musical arrangements — Martin McCarrick’s cello, Gini Ball’s violin and viola, Steven Young’s piano — elevate the song into mopey, moody transcendence.
