“Join Our Club” by Saint Etienne

“People Get Real” Single (1992)

Saint Etienne originally wrote “Join Our Club” as something of a joke when their label, Heavenly Records, originally refused to release “People Get Real.” The trio of Sarah Cracknell, Bob Stanley, and Pete Wiggs then set out to write the most commercial song they could and snuck in references to other pop hits (e.g., Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” CeCe Peniston’s “We Got a Love Thang”) to a pulsing house beat.

Ironically, the song became one of their biggest hits upon release, and it’s easy to see why. Though intended as something cheesy, “Join Our Club” is as euphoric and celebratory as dance pop gets. If heaven’s got a discothèque, then “Join Our Club” is the exact sort of song that the angels would be spinning every single night.
