“Let Down” by Radiohead
“Let Down” was originally going to be the first single for Radiohead’s landmark OK Computer, but that honor ultimately went to “Paranoid Android,” and the rest is history. (Fun fact: Thom Yorke didn’t even want the song on the album in the first place, and the disagreement nearly broke up the band.) As a result, “Let Down” often gets overshadowed by the album’s other songs, and it doesn’t help that it’s rarely performed live due to its intricate nature.
However, “Let Down” features what is arguably Yorke’s loveliest performance on the album even though he’s singing about bugs getting crushed into the ground and “disappointed people clinging to bottles.” Like the rest of OK Computer, “Let Down” is a critique of our modern malaise, in which technology and consumerism make it all too easy to just go through the motions of living. Bleak as that sounds, Radiohead still renders it into something beautiful with fragile guitar melodies and soaring arrangements.
