Stereolab can certainly get skronky and experimental, but they’re at their very best when their experimental proclivities are restrained and used to expand their indelible pop sensibilities. Case in point: “Miss Modular,” the second song and lead single from Dots and Loops (which also happens to be my favorite Stereolab album).

With its percolating bass and Farfisa organ, Andy Ramsay’s wonderfully shuffling beat, analog squelches, and Sean O’Hagan’s brass arrangements, the song’s a real feast for the ears. Meanwhile, Lætitia Sadier coos — in French, natch — about the evils of consumerism and materialism, drawing inspiration from Situationist theory.

Even if you’re not into Left-wing French political theory, though, there’s no denying that “Miss Modular” absolutely swings in the funkiest and grooviest manner.
