INXS’ sixth studio album is a veritable embarrassment of ’80s pop-rock riches, containing some of the band’s biggest hits. Packed to the gills with lavish production and the band’s triple-guitar attack, Kick — which clocks in at just under 40 minutes — is a rollicking good time. Which makes the anthemic ballad “Never Tear Us Apart” hit that much harder.

Backed by swooning strings, moody synths, and Kirk Pengilly’s searing sax solo, frontman Michael Hutchence pours his heart out for all to see, crooning “I was standing/You were there/Two worlds collided/And they could never, ever tear us apart.” Adding to the song’s effect, its music video was shot in Prague, and the city’s mist-filled streets — which were still under Communist rule at the time — imbues its romanticism with an exotic mystique.

Sadly, “Never Tear Us Apart” has acquired additional layers of meaning since its release. The song was inspired by Hutchence’s girlfriend at the time, Michele Bennett, who was the last person he called before committing suicide in 1997. And it was the song that played as his casket was carried out of St Andrew’s Cathedral by his bandmates. All of which adds a truly tragic quality to the song that both deepens its desperate emotional appeal and ensures its timelessness.
