“Appetite” is arguably the best example of Prefab Sprout’s take on sophisti-pop, which emerged out of Britain’s New Wave scene in the ‘80s and incorporated elements of jazz and soul. With Thomas Dolby’s lush production, airy synths, and Wendy Smith’s delicate harmonies, the song certainly goes down smooth.

If you dig just a little beneath its glossy surface, however, then you’ll discover that “Appetite” is actually a heart-wrenching conversation between a woman and the man who’s left her pregnant, both of whom are trying to justify their bad decisions. It’s to Paddy McAloon’s credit as a songwriter, however, that “Appetite” is neither melodramatic nor judgmental but remains a deeply sensitive ballad about human flaws and desires that still sounds absolutely fantastic even after 40 years.
