The artwork for Fortuna Records’ original 1984 release of Structures from Silence depict multi-colored octahedrons floating above a geometric horizon that stretches out to the nighttime sky. Though abstract, it suggests deep space and other planes of existence. Which makes it the perfect visual metaphor for Steve Roach’s ambient soundscapes.

Composed on an Oberheim OB8 analog synthesizer, “Reflections in Suspension” slowly forms out of deep pools of pure sound, while seemingly random notes and tones twinkle in the distance, creating a sense of spaciousness. As the song unfolds, Roach’s sounds begin to swell, growing increasingly richer and more majestic as sonorous melodies emerge, evoking vast cosmic structures that exist beyond human comprehension.
