You can certainly use a word like “autumnal” to describe “September Brings the Autumn Dawn,” and Lord knows I’ve done so on many occasions. After all, it’s right there in the title. But that doesn’t fully capture the ephemeral nature of Hood’s post-rock, which funnels latter-day Talk Talk through lo-fi DIY scrappiness.

Although the song features guitar, bass, drums, and vocals, the key element is the barely-there sounds floating about in the background, be it a jumble of conversations or distant church bells. Those field recordings and whatnot add another layer of reality that lies just beyond the edge of comprehension, hinting at quaint, ivy-covered British villages trapped in the amber of a perpetual fall twilight.

I could admittedly be reading too much into things, and it’s entirely possible that Hood included those sounds on a whim just because they sounded cool. Regardless, every time I listen to “September Brings the Autumn Dawn,” it feels like I’m entering a “thin place,” and glimpsing — or hearing, as the case may be — a world that lies just beyond the senses.
