“Serpentskirt” by Cocteau Twins and Faye Wong
Very few vocalists could hope to hold their own with Cocteau Twins’ Elizabeth Fraser, but one such individual is Faye Wong. Although best known in the West for her acting career (e.g., Chungking Express), Wong is also one of the best-selling Cantopop artists of all time. Although much of her music falls under the “pop” umbrella, Wong has also explored more alternative styles, covering the likes of Tori Amos, Cranberries and Cocteau Twins.
For the Hong Kong release of Milk & Kisses, she recorded this lovely duet with the Twins. Perhaps the best thing I can say is that it’s nigh-impossible to tell where Fraser’s voice ends and Wong’s begins. Their voices are a perfect match, and intertwine effortlessly. Meanwhile, Robin Guthrie and Simon Raymonde create a backdrop of endlessly chiming guitars, a fitting sonic temple for two of the world’s finest vocalists.
