Stina Nordenstam’s debut LP was a perfect showcase for the Swedish singer’s versatile voice, which easily ranges from breezy and ethereal to playful and coquettish. But “Soon After Christmas” is filled with pure heartache, with Nordenstam on the verge of tears.

As Nordenstam sits at her piano, accompanied only by some subtle French horn, she sounds like she can hardly finish the song as she sings of a lonely city locked in a snowless winter, with nothing but the light of the TV screen to keep her company. “I wanted so to have you/And I wanted you to know/I wanted to write songs/About how we’re walking in the snow,” she sings, before confessing that “Every inch of my skin is crying for your hands.”
