With its blend of Eastern and Western instrumentation, philosophical lyrics, and the immaculate voices of Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard, Dead Can Dance’s music has always felt esoteric, as if you’re listening to some ancient, sacred text or hymn. That’s particularly the case on early albums like 1988’s The Serpent’s Egg and 1985’s Spleen and Ideal.

“The Carnival Is Over” is impossible to mistake for the work of any other band, but it’s more accessible and — dare I say? — almost pop-like compared to the duo’s more well-known material. Furthermore, its tale of childhood innocence and wonder, which was inspired by some of Perry’s own memories, is far more personal and less enigmatic than the band’s usual fare. That said, Perry’s rich, impassioned baritone and the nostalgia-heavy synth arrangements ensure that it’s no less magical than any other Dead Can Dance song.
