Critics gushed over Seefeel’s debut album when it was released, with one calling it “a sublime groove midway between MBV’s sensual tumult and Aphex Twin’s ambient serenity.” Indeed, Quique blends together aspects of shoegaze, ambient, electronic, and even industrial music in a way that I’d never heard before, and haven’t since.

All of Quique is worthwhile, but in its best moments, like “Through You,” it seems to be channeling something from a whole ’nother universe of subtle chill. Not surprisingly, it’s one of the reasons why, decades later, I still reach for Quique when I need to achieve a “flow” state of mind while diving into some code.
