Hood circa 2001

There are some albums that, as much as you might enjoy them year round, really only reveal themselves during certain times of the year. And for me, Hood’s Cold House can only be truly enjoyed when the mercury starts to drop, frost begins to form on the windows, and you can feel the first snow forming in the grey skies overhead.

Originally released in November 2001 by the Aesthetics label here in the States, Cold House found Christopher and Richard Adams, along with their various collaborators, expanding the pastoral post-rock of The Cycle of Days and Seasons and Rustic Houses, Forlorn Valleys to include glitch, IDM, and even hip-hop courtesy of guest vocalists Dose One and Why? (cLOUDDEAD). On paper, it doesn’t seem like all of that should work very well together, but in truth, Cold House is a fascinating and deeply affecting album (read my review) that perfectly captures the isolation and doldrums of winter on songs like “Branches Bare” and “Enemy of Time.”

To mark the album’s upcoming 25th anniversary, Domino — which previously reissued Cold House as part of 2011’s Recollected box set — have announced an expanded edition that includes new artwork, archival imagery, a new interview between Simon Reynolds and the band, and bonus recordings. The album will be released on “audiophile” double vinyl and CD, as well as digitally. Here’s the full track list:
