Arrow Video Is Giving Takashi Shimizu’s Ju-On: The Grudge the 4K Treatment

And I’ll give you three guesses as to whose review will be included in the film’s booklet.

Originally released in 2002, Takashi Shimizu’s Ju-On: The Grudge was part of a wave of acclaimed Japanese horror films in the late ’90s and early ’00s that included Hideo Nakata’s Ring and Dark Water, Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s Pulse, and Higuchinsky’s Uzumaki. Shimizu takes a simple premise — a rage-filled ghost kills everyone who comes into contact with her — and spins it into a truly terrifying film that possesses an inescapable sense of dread.

I first saw Ju-On back in 2003 as part of the Toronto International Film Festival’s “Midnight Madness” program. Sitting there in the long-since-demolished Uptown Theater, and screaming alongside hundreds of other genre and cult film fans every time Kayako claimed another victim, or Toshio’s death rattle filled the speakers, remains one of my favorite moviegoing experiences of any genre.

Thus, it’s really exciting to see that Arrow Video is giving Shimizu’s film their usual deluxe treatment, with a 4K restoration and a cornucopia of bonus content and special features, including interviews with the cast and crew, deleted scenes, and behind-the-scenes footage. And I’m particularly delighted to say that my review of Ju-On will be included in the film’s booklet alongside other Ju-On reviews and articles from Grady Hendrix, William Carroll, and Lindsay Nelson.
