A Little Homunculus Needs Your Help to Tell Another Story

Back in 2015, illustrator Seth T. Hahne published Monkess the Homunculus, a delightful children’s graphic novel about the adventures of a little homunculus and her puffin best friend. For the last 13 months, Hahne has been working on a sequel, Monkess and the Springtime Sonata, and recently launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund its printing and publication.

This is the story of how a little girl homunculus and her puffiny best friend discover a secret long hidden on their island home — a secret that will make their life immeasurably better! Monkess is buoyant and adventurous and loves her experience of life and engages it with gusto. Puffin enjoys his little projects and is always game to join Monkess on her explorations.

Monkess and the Springtime Sonata contains a broad mix of words and descriptions, some geared toward simplifying the world and some meant to promote a love for the mystery of words and expanding vocabularies. The book includes thematic episodes that would normally be considered dangers or conflicts (such as erupting volcanoes, spelunking, and losing at board games), but by virtue of Monkess’s near immortality (she’s very sturdy) and outlook, these are just more happy elements of her adventures.

All backers of the Monkess and the Springtime Sonata campaign will get a hardcover first edition and digital PDF version, with stretch goals including autographs and original sketches.

I’ve been a fan of Hahne’s ever since he started doing illustrations for Christ and Pop Culture, and am a proud owner of several of his works, including Monkess the Homunculus and his lovely Piranesi prints (which can be purchased from his Etsy shop). Thus, backing his latest Kickstarter campaign was a no-brainer.
