“Algol” by Remina

I first became aware of Heike Langhans through her work with the “cosmic metal” outfit ISON, and in particular, 2019’s majestic Inner-Space. Following her departure from ISON, Langhans has been involved in several other projects, including LOR3L3I, Light Field Reverie, and most recently Remina, a duo with Mike Lamb (Sojourner, Light Field Reverie).

As was the case with Langhans’ ISON work, Remina proffers a more atmospheric take on metal. Sure, there are doom-laden riffs and chugging rhythms a-plenty in a song like “Algol,” but there are just as many ethereal, spaced-out synth treatments, creating a contemplative, reflective tone.

Further enhancing that tone is Langhans’ elegant voice, which is perfectly matched with the goth-y, dramatic vocals of Mick Moss (Antimatter). Which, frankly, are the only kind of vocals that should be entrusted with lyrics like “Obscured by dark matter/A solar eclipse commanded by gravity/I’m falling under/Magnetic fields of something siphoning energy.”

“Algol” is the first single from Remina’s upcoming, as yet unannounced album.
