If you were to compile a list of the least likely artists to be covered, I’m pretty sure Autechre would be right near the top. Rob Brown and Sean Booth’s dense electronic music — or IDM, as some folks are wont to call it — frequently defies description, never mind attempts at transcription and reinterpretation. But let’s just say you were going to try and cover Autechre, anyway. In that case, I highly doubt that you’d choose to do so with nothing more than an acoustic guitar.
But that’s precisely what Shane Parish (Ahleuchatistas, The Bill Orcutt Guitar Quartet) has set out to do with Autechre Guitar. With his trusted Taylor guitar in hand, Parish has recorded a collection of acoustic covers culled from Autechre’s earliest releases, including Amber and Tri Repetae. As for “Eggshell,” the album’s second track, it comes from Autechre’s 1993 debut, Incunabula. Here, Parish focuses on the melodies that emerge from Brown and Booth’s beat clusters, his intricate fret work perfectly capturing the complexity of the duo’s production and arrangements.
