“Glue” by Cigarettes for Breakfast

Not to be confused with Cigarettes After Sex, Philadelphia’s Cigarettes for Breakfast delve into a similarly atmospheric sound. But whereas Cigarettes After Sex is all sensual and languid, Cigarettes for Breakfast — which is primarily the solo project of Matthew Paul Whiteford — pummels your eardrums in the finest classic shoegaze fashion.

Case in point: “Glue” — from the upcoming Slow Motion album — kicks off with a series of head-rattling snare hits before assailing you with wave after wave of feedback and distortion-laden “glider” guitar à la Kevin Shields. Indeed, listening to “Glue” might induce a little confusion as to whether it’s the mid 2020s or the early 1990s — and I mean that in a good way.
