It’s A Very Sufjan-y Christmas… 2007 Edition

Sufjan Stevens

It’s not even Thanksgiving yet, and the folks at Asthmatic Kitty are already looking forward to the Yuletide season.

Last year, they released Songs For Christmas, a 5-disc set from everyone’s favorite indie composer, Sufjan Stevens. To make sure that noone missed out, they also streamed the entire set online for free in the weeks leading up to Christmas, and they’re doing so again this year. Click here to bring season’s greetings to your house right now. (Or you can buy the entire set for a paltry $19.)

Which brings us to the second part of Asthmatic Kitty and Sufjan Stevens’ holiday extravaganza. How would you like to find a special, brand new Christmas song from Sufjan Stevens waiting for you under the Christmas tree (or at least, in your inbox)? Well, this year you can. All you have to do is write and record an original Christmas song and send it to Asthmatic Kitty. They’ll pick a winner, who will then give the rights to their song to Sufjan, and in exchange, Sufjan will give them the rights to his song.

Just like a gift exhange, Sufjan’s song becomes your song. You can hoard it for yourself, sell it to a major soft drink corporation, use it in your daughter’s first Christmas video, or share it for free on your website. No one except Sufjan and you will hear his song, unless you decide otherwise. You get the song and all legal rights to it. We get the same rights to your song.

One caveat, though: Asthmatic Kitty reserves the right to stream your submitted song online. So you never know who will get to listen to your Christmas-themed composition — could be all of the Intertubes that benefits from your holiday spirit. You can find the complete list of rules here. The contest ends midnight, December 1, 2007, so best get started.

In other Sufjan-y news, Sufjan and My Brightest Diamond will be heading out to the Pacific for tour dates in Australia and Japan. Click here for more tour details.
