“June” by The Day

Since June is literally right around the corner, it might be a bit on the nose to share a song called “June,” but I don’t really care, not when the song’s this delightful and seasonally appropriate. Released earlier this month, The Day’s The Kids Are Alright is filled with lush indie-pop highlighted by Laura Loeters’ soft vocals and Gregor Sonnenberg’s impeccable melodies, which bring to mind the likes of Pure Bathing Culture and Ivy.

It’s all lovely stuff, but “June” is an immediate highlight. One of the album’s dreamier tracks, thanks to silvery guitar melodies that slip and slide over brushed drums and a rolling bass line, it’s the ideal song for lying down on the green grass and watching the clouds drift by overhead, or for taking long, meandering drives through the countryside with the windows rolled down.

Naturally, the song’s lyrics are imbued with a light nostalgia, as Loeters reflects on childhood friendships (“First of June came to an end/I wonder if you still pretend/That we’re the kids we used to be”) but it’s neither overbearing nor solipsistic thanks to her effortless vocals and the song’s breezy arrangements.
