Luke Etcheverry’s Line Is a Delightfully Retro Racing Short
The four-and-a-half minute short is pixel animation par excellence.
If I didn’t know better, I’d swear that Luke Etcheverry’s Line is a cut-scene or trailer for some long-forgotten game that I used to play on my Commodore 64. The four-and-a-half minute short, in which a driver tries to break the land speed record in his supersonic vehicle, is pixel animation par excellence.
The level of detail in Etcheverry’s animations, backdrops, and characters is delightful, as are the little flourishes, like that silent shot of the car’s progress from space. And to top it all off, there’s NMX Audio’s bangin’ synthwave score.
Here’s the best way I can put it: Line’s short length leaves me wanting to know more — in the best sense possible — about the driver Niki, his team, and their racing exploits.
