The Macross Plus Ultimate Edition Can Now Be Pre-Ordered

I’ve made no secret of my love for Shōji Kawamori’s Macross Plus. Originally released in 1994, and featuring cutting edge animation as well as a gorgeous Yoko Kanno soundtrack, Macross Plus is one of the highlights of the Macross anime franchise. Sadly, it — along with all of the other Macross titles — was unavailable here in the States for years due to legal entanglements.

But now that the lawyers are finally satisfied, various Macross titles are slowly making their way across the Pacific. First up was Macross II earlier this year, and now it’s Macross Plus’ turn in the form of an incredible “Ultimate” edition box set that features both the OVA and movie versions, various promotional materials, art cards, a poster, and best of all, a massive 184-page book that delves into the art of Macross Plus.

The catch, however, is that it’ll cost you $189.99 on Crunchyroll and will arrive later this fall. As much as I love Macross Plus and want to support Macross here in the States, that’s just a bit too rich for my blood right now. Here’s hoping that a cheaper “Standard” edition that, at the very least, also contains the OVA and movie versions of Macross Plus will be released later this year, as well.

In related news, most of the Macross titles are still scheduled to begin streaming on Disney+ at some point this year.
