“O Tempo (Foi O Meu Mestre)” by Fabiano Do Nascimento and The Vittor Santos Orchestra

After thoroughly enjoying this year’s Aquáticos, I decided to check out some more of Brazilian guitarist Fabiano do Nascimento’s music, and I’m glad I did. Specifically, his upcoming Vila album, a collaboration with composer Vittor Santos and his 16-piece orchestra that’s inspired by do Nascimento’s childhood neighborhood.

Fittingly, “O Tempo (Foi O Meu Mestre)” — which originally appeared in a more stripped down form on 2017’s Tempo Dos Mestres — opens the album on a delightful note that’s highlighted by trilling woodwinds, playful strings, and do Nascimento’s own deft and intricate acoustic guitar.

It’s the perfect morning song, something spirited to listen to while you drink your coffee, watch the light fill up the sky, and consider your plans. Midway through, however, a gentle melancholy — what some might call saudade — begins to color the song without overwhelming it. The arrangements grow a bit more subdued while do Nascimento’s clear vocals chime in and acknowledge the passage of time.
