“Southbound Formations” by Poemme (Meydän Remix)

The French producer remixes one of my favorite ambient albums of all time.

Since its release in 2017, Poemme’s Soft Ice has become one of my absolute favorite ambient albums, ranking right alongside such classics of the genre as Steve Roach’s Structures From Silence and vidnaObmana’s The River of Appearance.

Back in 2019, French producer Meydän released a remix of one of Soft Ice’s best songs, “Southbound Formations,” that takes the original’s reverb-drenched piano melodies and runs them through the audio equivalent of a Gaussian blur. The resulting song is less distinct and melodic than Poemme’s composition, though no less beautiful.

Meydän’s latest single is “A Pretty Standard Dance in the 4th Dimension,” which blends piano melodies and frenetic beats in increasingly abstract ways. Prior to that, he composed the soundtrack for 2023’s Terra Nil, an acclaimed strategy video game in which players must develop an ecological paradise.

As for Poemme, aka Angela Klimek, she contributed a remix to Marine Eyes’ 2023 album Idyll. Her last release, however, was 2019’s Frozen Passages. She’s also posted some excerpts and works in progress to Poemme’s Soundcloud page, but nothing within the last few years. Hopefully, that means we’ll be graced with a new Poemme album in the not-too-distant future.
