The Ninth Day, December 6

The Ninth Day - Volker Schlöndorff

According to Amazon, Volker Schlöndorff’s gripping The Ninth Day will be coming out on DVD on December 6, 2005. I saw some pretty good movies at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival, and The Ninth Day easily ranked among the best I saw. Of all of the movies I saw at the fest, The Ninth Day has probably stuck with me the most, with its complex characters and amazing handling of touchy spiritual and historic issues.

The special features look to be a little skimpy, unfortunately. The only one of any note is the interview with Schlöndorff, which could be quite good. I attended a Q&A session with Schlöndorff after seeing the film, and it was quite good. Schlöndorff handled some potentially thorny questions quite well, and discussed how he approached the material. Hopefully, the DVD’s interview will be as good.

Steven Greydanus has an extremely well-written review of the movie on his site, as well as an interview with Schlöndorff that’s quite insightful.
