“The Show” by The Rope

The Rope’s goth-y post-punk has all of the spectral vocals, slashing guitars, and icy textures you could possibly hope for, and given that their upcoming album Nightbird clocks in at 27 minutes, they also possess the gift of efficiency. The Minneapolis outfit specializes in breaking in, smacking you in the face with blistering tunes (like the Sisters of Mercy-esque title track), and getting out, leaving you reeling — and wanting to experience it all over again.

That’s doubly true when their biting lyrics reference heavier topics like school shootings (“Violence”) and social corruption and collapse (“Nightmare,” “Witchblade”). But The Rope prove just as effective when they slow down, lean into the atmosphere, and get reflective on album highlight “The Show.”

Opening with a solemn beat and some funereal synths à la The Cure’s Faith, the song moves at an inexorable pace that belies its three minutes. During that time, Mike Browning’s guitar grows more urgent while Jesse Hagon intones words of defiance and encouragement (e.g., “Don’t be tempted by the poison water/Don’t be taken by the brutal stream/Though you’re living in the night of slaughter/Your dawn is coming”). The result is a thoughtful counterpoint to the edgy, anarchistic gloom that pervades the rest of the album.
