“Whispers on Argyle” by Night Swimming

The Bristol dream pop quintet’s latest is their best song yet, and given their catalog to date, that’s really saying something.

Bristol’s Night Swimming has been steadily gaining acclaim in recent years for their breezy dream pop. If you’ve heard any of their gossamery songs, which strive to blend old school shoegaze with hints of classic Bristol trip-hop, then that should come as no real surprise.

The quintet’s latest single, “Whispers on Argyle,” might just be their best song yet. Meg Jones’ voice is an absolute dream here, drifting effortlessly through increasingly intricate guitars, soft atmospherics, and subtle-yet-surprising melodic shifts. And if that weren’t enough, the song is also shot through with a pensive heartache (“I’m less to you than your friends,” sings/sighs Jones at one point) that makes the band’s dreaminess all the more bittersweet — and wonderfully so.

At just over four minutes, “Whispers on Argyle” is an ideal song to get lost in, time and again. Every time it’s over, I feel compelled to press “Play” in order to hear Jones’ lovely caress of a voice just one more time, or to try and find my way through the song’s delicate-yet-complex arrangements.

According to their Facebook page, Night Swimming plans to release several more singles in the coming months, “tapping further into themes present on our first EP and developing new atmospheres in our sound world” as they prepare for their next recording. And I can’t wait to hear them all.
