“Yellow Green and Gold” by Pneumatic Tubes
If I told you that Pneumatic Tubes’ Jesse Chandler plays keyboards and woodwinds for Midlake and Mercury Rev, then I suspect that’ll give you a clue or two about what to expect from “Yellow Green and Gold,” the first single from his upcoming Runner’s High.
It’s a breezy, free-wheeling song that evokes the ethereal hauntology usually associated with Ghost Box Records, but with a pastoral American feel that’s as comforting as it is eerie. Chandler’s reverbed flute drifts over a shuffling beat and pinwheeling guitar melodies, while his voice gives the song a wide-eyed, yearning quality.
Although the album was inspired by Chandler’s love of running, as well as his late father’s running journals, “Yellow Green and Gold” possesses a shambling quality that seems better suited for long, leisurely walks through the tall grass, much like you’d find at the Spring Creek Prairie Audubon Center just outside of Lincoln.
Runner’s High will be released by Belbury Music on August 22, 2025.
