Your Friend, Nate Bargatze helped me realize something about Nate Bargatze’s stand-up: it’s consistently amusing, but rarely hilarious. His latest Netflix special, which finds the popular comedian ruminating — in his trademark low-key manner — on such hoary topics as pet ownership and the differences between him and his wife, certainly elicited chuckles throughout its hour-long runtime. (I laughed loudest at Bargatze’s recollections of being a water meter reader after 9/11, which is one of his first bits.) But there were also long stretches during which I had nothing more than a sort of half-smile on my face, and I don’t think I ever once doubled over in laughter. For the record, though, I’m not going to suggest that Bargatze obviously needs to spice up his act with some profanity; I actually respect him for keeping his humor clean through and through.
