Riz Ahmed shines in this slow-burning thriller about a fixer who might be getting a bit too close to his latest client, a woman (Lily James) who’s facing threats and harassment from a large biotech firm for her potential whistleblowing. In order to keep his identity secret, Ahmed’s fixer employs a relay service for the deaf — arguably the film’s most clever and intriguing detail — but as the threats mount, he might have to compromise his ideals and emerge from the shadows. As expected with this sort of film, Relay is full of twists and turns, though it perhaps has one twist too many that strains disbelief. Still, Ahmed’s quiet, understated performance is captivating and pulls you into his lonely-by-design world. As a result, Relay is engaging right to the end.
