Walking Wounded has been called the first album to fuse pop and electronica. I don’t know if that’s actually true or not. What I do know, however, is that for a period of time during the late ’90s, I had Walking Wounded in near-constant rotation, especially during late-night drives after work. On more than one occasion, I’d take the long way home, which involved — for you Lincoln natives out there — hopping onto Rosa Parks Way and taking it to Highway 77 with “Good Cop Bad Cop” on repeat.

Not surprisingly, I was in a bad way, romantically speaking, at the time, and Tracey Thorn’s soulful voice and heartfelt lyrics provided no small amount of solace. When she sang “It’s wrong to feel this way/I know it’s wrong, I know it’s bad/To only see what isn’t there/To want and want and never have,” she perfectly expressed all of my emotional turmoil. Meanwhile, Ben Watt’s production and programming ensured that the melancholy had a slick, contemporary sheen that was eminently listenable as I made my lonely way back home through the Lincoln streets.
