It’s a seemingly simple premise: a man gets stuck in the same day, over and over again. But in the hands of director Harold Ramis, Danny Rubin’s story becomes surprisingly high-minded… and hilarious.

It doesn’t hurt that Bill Murray stars as Phil Connors, an arrogant and cynical weatherman who regards the residents of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, and their Groundhog Day festivities with utter contempt. But as he relives Groundhog Day over and over again, and begins interacting with Punxsutawney’s people, something miraculous begins to happen: Phil actually starts to become a decent human being.

I have very fond memories of watching Groundhog Day with my high school youth group, and its dialog became something of an inside joke for us. Even after 30+ years, its comedically existential tale remains as charming and entertaining as ever.
