Kenji (Tadanobu Asano) is a suicide-obsessed Japanese librarian living in Bangkok whose various attempts at ending his life are always foiled, particularly when his overbearing yakuza brother suddenly drops by for a visit. Meanwhile, a young woman named Noi (Sinitta Boonyasak) gets into an argument with her own sister, with tragic consequences.

These two lost and lonely souls are slowly and inextricably drawn together in this gently surreal film from Thailand’s Pen-ek Ratanaruang. Part romance, part comedy, and part crime caper, Last Life in the Universe unfolds like a waking dream thanks to Ratanaruang’s gentle direction and ambiguous script, Christopher Doyle’s lush cinematography, some surreal visual effects, and a dreamily melancholy soundtrack from Vichaya Vatanasapt and Jettamon Malayota that lingers with you long after the credits have stopped rolling.
