Producer Steve Albini, who worked on several of Low’s albums, once called Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker “the pure singing ideal.” He wasn’t wrong. And though it would be more than accurate to call the husband/wife duo’s harmonies “heavenly” or “effortless,” such words also feel grossly insufficient. One of Low’s most beloved songs, “Over the Ocean” is arguably the best example of their voices at work.

What makes “Over the Ocean” all the more affecting is how humble it sounds. The duo don’t employ any vocal histrionics or pyrotechnics because they’ve never needed to resort to such tricks or gimmicks. Sparhawk and Parker’s voices fit and flow together as perfectly as anything in God’s creation, and that perfect fit is what makes their performance so ineffable and sublime.
