Joel and Ethan Coen are no stranger to idiosyncratic films that walk the line between farce and drama. With their 1987 film about a baby-desperate couple who steal a quintuplet, though, the Coens lean heavily into farce, populating Raising Arizona with all manner of misfits and miscreants.

At the center of it all is “Hi” McDunnough, an inept but kind-hearted thief who just wants to start a family with his wife, even if that means kidnapping. Nicolas Cage is simply wonderful as McDunnough, perfectly capturing the man’s constant state of befuddlement as his young family is beset by McDunnough’s former criminal associates, a racist boss, and even a bounty hunter who seems to come from the very depths of Hell itself.

As with the Coens’ other films, common decency and human goodness win out in the end, though it takes some wild, and wildly hilarious, detours along the way.
