Shaolin Soccer by Stephen Chow
Sing has devoted his life to the principles of Shaolin kung fu, but sadly, Shaolin principles seem to have precious little relevance in 21st-century Hong Kong. But when he runs into a disgraced soccer player, Sing reunites with his fellow Shaolin brethren in a quest to spread the teachings of Shaolin, one goal at a time. But in order to do so, they’ll need to take on an evil tycoon with a deadly soccer team of his own.
Make no mistake, Shaolin Soccer is utterly ridiculous, but this being a Stephen Chow flick, it completely leans into said ridiculousness, and thankfully so. Filled with cartoonish CGI effects (imagine live-action Tex Avery) and hilarious references and parodies — I’m partial to the “Thriller” reference, myself — Shaolin Soccer is just a whole lot of wacky fun.
