The Mary Onettes have all of the right influences: New Order, A-ha, The Smiths, The Cure, Echo and the Bunnymen. But rather than sound like mere rip-offs, the Swedish band excel at inhabiting their influences so fully that they make those classic sounds feel fresh and original all over again. Much of that’s due to Philip Ekström’s expressive voice and lyrics, while his bandmates excel at creating suitably sweeping indie-pop anthems like “Slow.”

On paper, you can chart out the song’s confluence of ’80s alternative icons, but when Ekström cries out “Slowly goes my heart/We should never be apart/Slowly goes my dreams/How can we forget it all?” whilst backed by driving rhythms and lofty synth melodies, The Mary Onettes make it seem like they’re the very first band to ever make music this majestically mopey.
