Harold Budd has collaborated with numerous musicians over the years, blending his minimal and elegant piano arrangements with the likes of Cocteau Twins, Brian Eno, Daniel Lanois, and Andy Partridge — all of them sublime. Budd’s aesthetic was so complete and established throughout his career that it’s difficult to label any of his recordings as “definitive.”

That said, his 2003 collaboration with Ultravox’s John Foxx comes pretty close, and almost entirely on the strength of one song. “Subtext” might be the definitive Harold Budd song; his jewelled piano notes, each of which is a deep well of emotion, sound especially pensive here, and seem to echo all the way to the horizon and beyond.
