Cursive’s 2000 breakthrough album, Domestica, was inspired in part by frontman Tim Kasher’s divorce. But when Cursive released The Ugly Organ in 2003, it was clear that Kasher was still working through some stuff. A multi-part concept album, The Ugly Organ chronicles its character’s various struggles with life and love.

“The Recluse” finds the album’s protagonist waking up in a strange woman’s bedroom, hating himself for being so weak and yet desperate for human connection (“I wake alone in a woman’s room I hardly know/I wake alone, pretending that I am finally home”). But for all of its lyrical self-loathing, “The Recluse” is quite the earworm with Kasher and Ted Stevens’ spidery, Cure-ish guitars, Jenny Lewis’ (Rilo Kiley) vocals, and Gretta Cohn’s cello.
