Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai is Coming to Theaters in 4K

The restoration marks the legendary film’s 70th anniversary.

Earlier this year, Toho debuted a 4K restoration of Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival to mark the legendary film’s 70th anniversary. Now, Janus Films is bringing the restoration to American theaters this July, first in New York and Los Angeles, and then more widely (though the complete list of dates hasn’t been released yet).

Widely considered one of the greatest films of all time, Seven Samurai follows the exploits of the titular group of warriors after they’re hired by a poor village beset by vicious bandits. Released in 1954, the film has been remade several times (e.g., The Magnificent Seven) and helped establish the formula employed by such films as The Dirty Dozen, Star Wars, Saving Private Ryan, and The Avengers.

I had the fortune of seeing Seven Samurai in theaters many years ago, and it was an amazing cinematic experience.
