“And Nothing Is Forever” by The Cure (Danny Briottet & Rico Conning Remix)

Earlier this month, The Cure released Mixes of a Lost World, a three-disc collection containing 24 remixes of songs from last year’s acclaimed Songs of a Lost World. (It’s the band’s third remix album following 2018’s Torn Down and 1990’s Mixed Up.)

Mixes features plenty of luminaries, including Paul Oakenfold, Orbital, Four Tet, and Mogwai. Even with those names, though, it’s very much for Cure obsessives and completists only. That said, it does contain some interesting gems, like Daybreakers’ pulsing take on “Warsong” and The Twilight Sad’s noisier version of “A Fragile Thing.”

However, the remix that really grabs my attention is Danny Briottet and Rico Conning’s take on “And Nothing Is Forever,” which polishes the original’s gloom with glossy production, some ultra-smooth bass, and a house-y groove that’s not all that dissimilar to Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories. Indeed, I’m a little disappointed that Robert Smith’s voice didn’t get some vocoder treatment.
