“Burial Street” by The Void Wanderer

The Void Wanderer’s Empty World is one of my favorite ambient albums in recent memory. As I wrote in my review back in March, “whereas many of his dark ambient peers envision eldritch horrors, abyssal gloom, and slaughterhouse nightmares with their ominous soundscapes, Zaplatkin Fedor Pavlovich… opts for a more subdued and elegiac approach that proves just as affecting, if not more so.”

Turns out, Pavlovich is quite the prolific musician, as evidenced by his Soundcloud page. There are plenty of ambient soundscapes to be heard on there, as well as more beat-driven material like this 2023 collaboration with Rautu. “Burial Street,” however, hews fairly closely to Empty World, with drifting sonics and other ghostly elements that also bring to mind 2814’s vaporwave classic Rain Temple.

As with the best ambient music, “Burial Street” feels like it contains within its six minutes a whole ‘nother world, one that you only glimpse before the song is over — which compels you to press “Play” and experience it all over again.
