“In the Snowfall” by The Void Wanderer

Ever since hearing 2024’s Empty World, I’ve been a fan of Zaplatkin Fedor Pavlovich’s melancholy atmospherics, which he releases as The Void Wanderer. So imagine my delighted surprise when I open up Apple Music today and see a new release from the man. The Snowfall EP features the same moody ambience heard on his Cyro Chamber releases, only with the addition of gentle, even playful piano arrangements, which lighten the mood but do nothing to dull the effect.

All three of the EP’s songs are lovely, but closing track “In the Snowfall” is particularly so, its piano melodies striking a balance between the sparse moodiness of, say, Julia Andersson, and Joe Hisaishi’s whimsical nostalgia. Alas, Lincoln has had very little snow this holiday season. (It’s currently sunny and 53° Fahrenheit as I type this.) But if there was snow on the ground, then “In the Snowfall” (as its title suggests) would be perfect soundtrack for a little excursion out into the winter wonderland.
